UWC Celebrates International Writing Center Week

Miami Gardens– On February 18th writers, composition programs, and writing centers around the country celebrated International Writing Center Week (IWCW). The UWC @ STU held a celebration filled with activities, food, and music from various locations around the world.

Some of the activities included the Multi-lingual Never Ending Story, in which students were asked to write a sentence or two in their native language. They added from what they were able to make out of the story.

The UWC played music and tutors brought food from Brazil, Dominican Republic, Cuba and other countries. UWC Tutors and Interns also contributed to the event by making poster presentations on what they do in the UWC:
  • Research Assistant (Aileen)
  • ENG 101 Assistant (Leo)
  • Management
    • Office Manager (Karen)
    • Assistant Manager (Gelien & Chantale)
    • Night Manager (Juliann)
  • Public Relations Officer (Aryanne, Benson, & George)
  • Ads, Brochures, Pamphlets, Business Cards, Bookmarks, Press Releases, and Website

 The celebration concluded with a small presentation on Directed Learning Activities (DLAs), their purpose, and how they can help writers at any stage in the writing process. Those who participated even tried the Alphabet DLA and the 25 minute essay. One student, Ruben Aguilar, stated that it was a “fun way to interact with others in the room . . . it made writing fun.”
