UWC Sets Single-Year Record with 1500th Session

by Denise Pichardo (4/29/10)

Miami Gardens– On April 29, sophomore Diamond Howard became the 1500th face-to-face tutoring session conducted by STU’s UWC during the 2009-2010 academic year. Diamond, a regular UWC visitor, states that she “feels special,” and she was recognized with a certificate by Dr. Kevin Dvorak, the UWC Director.

Diamond (on right), a Psychology major, requested a session to work on her Rhetorical Grammafesto for ENC 373 Grammar and Rhetoric in Writing. Diamond worked with Denise Pichardo (on left), a senior tutor, on Higher Order Concerns (HOCs), such as focus and organization, and Lower Order Concerns (LOCs), such as grammar and punctuation.

When Karen Mejia, the UWC Office Manager, was asked about the new UWC record, she said, “I'm happy to see that the UWC is working with more students each year. We have grown a lot in my two and a half years here. It's great.”

The previous record was 809, set the previous year. With four days left, it is possible that the UWC might come close to nearly doubling the previous mark.
