Greensboro, NC- STU’s UWC staff delivered a plenary session at the 2009 SWCA Conference held at North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro, NC. There, the UWC staff discussed the vital requirements of successful writing center work in a diverse community of students whose origin span across the globe.

STU’s UWC’s plenary session detailed the many intricacies of writing center life, such as understanding cultural contexts within individual tutoring sessions. The tutors went into great detail explaining why it was necessary to sometimes use Spanish to help better explain English. This cultural shift that has taken place in the UWC and writing center’s across the nation has encouraged tutors and tutees to adjust to the new dynamics of writing center work.

Dr. Kevin Dvorak, director of the St. Thomas University’s writing center, said that the plenary was “an amazing experience.”
